As part of our CDC module, myself and classmates Orlaith and Kiera researched and recorded a podcast on a designer of our choice: Robert Ballagh
This podcast project was a completely new experience for me, as I had never created a podcast before or used audio editing software. Our group researched Robert Ballagh and explored his impact on Irish design culture, including his work in currency design, theatre set design, and the representation of Irish identity through art and design . Before recording, we had to organise our research into a clear structure and script, which helped me understand the importance of planning content carefully when presenting information through audio. Unlike a visual presentation, the podcast relied entirely on how clearly and engagingly we communicated our ideas.
Recording in the Glucksman Library Audio Lab was also a valuable experience. It was my first time using a professional recording space, so it made the process feel much more serious and realistic. At the start, it was uncomfortable to to hear my own voice played back and try sound natural while reading from a script. However, after a few takes, I became more relaxed and aware of my tone and pacing.
The editing stage was the most challenging part of the project for me. I edited the final recording in Audacity, which was software I had never used before. Learning how to cut sections and remove mistakes took time and patience. Although I found it difficult initially, I enjoyed learning a completely new skill and seeing how much editing improves the overall quality of a recording.
Overall, this project helped me develop new technical and communication skills. It pushed me outside my comfort zone by introducing me to podcasting, recording equipment, and audio editing for the first time. Looking back, I feel more confident using unfamiliar software and presenting information in alternative formats, which will be useful for future design projects and presentations.
